Not sure that's always true, but ideas often come from spinning a story around something and seeing where it leads.
This story is usually true - and that's how I prefer it.

I don't have a dog either - he's a metaphorical device, poor thing. Other devices depicted are purely literal, although I have simplified my work area, as it's present state could be mistaken for a landfill site.
